9 Simple and Effective Healthy Lifestyle Tips For Adults On The Go

NOVEMBER, 2020

Let’s face it, on paper living a healthy lifestyle is the easiest thing in the world. In reality, things aren’t quite that black and white.

We all know how important it is to take care of ourselves, to exercise, and to watch what we eat. Despite this, obesity levels are at record highs, life expectancies are creeping downwards, and generally our health is suffering.

To make matters worse, more of us appear to be busier and busier each day. If you have a hectic schedule to stick to, the last thing you’ll be thinking about is finding the time to exercise or prepare and cook healthy meals.

Despite this, it’s vital that we all find the time to look after ourselves as it could literally save our lives. This is where we come into the picture, as we’ll be looking at a few simple and effective healthy lifestyle tips for adults on the go.

1. Focus On Nutrition Rather Than Calories

With that said, far too many people out there find themselves prioritizing a diet low in calories over a diet rich in nutrients. With numerous slimming groups out there endorsing recipes packed full of artificial ingredients, it’s no wonder why so many people are suffering from ill-health.

When you prepare your meals, don’t just assume that because a food is low in calories, it is automatically healthy and good for you. Instead, look for healthy and natural foods that are packed full of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

If your diet is lacking in nutrients, you are at risk of suffering from a nutrient deficiency. This can lead to more serious health issues later down the line. Not only that but if you’re eating low-calorie foods that are loaded full of artificial ingredients and preservatives, you don’t know what kind of effect this will be having on you internally.

2. Try To Get More Natural Sunlight

Sunlight is very important for your general health, both physically and mentally. Rays from the sun enable the body to naturally synthesize vitamin D. This is why vitamin D is known as the ‘sunshine vitamin’.

Vitamin D promotes mental health, helps balance your hormones, assists with the uptake of other minerals such as calcium, strengthens the bones, boosts immunity, and plenty more.

Studies have found that as little as 15 minutes in the sunshine is sufficient enough to produce the recommended daily amount of vitamin D for the day.

That’s good in the summer, but what about in the fall and winter months? Well, in that instance, diets containing foods rich in vitamin D such as oily fish, red meat, mushrooms, and fortified cereal grains should be followed, along with vitamin D supplements.

3. Prioritize Sleep

We’ve all dealt with a lack of sleep at some point in our lives.

A lack of sleep not only makes us feel tired and irritable, but it can also affect our hormones, suppress our immune systems. It even leaves us susceptible to mental health issues such as stress, anxiety, and depression.

If you’re looking for ways of leading a healthy life, one of the best healthy lifestyle tips that you can follow is to aim to get between 7 and 9 hours of sleep each night. If that means you have to go to bed earlier, so be it.

4. Drink More Water And Ditch The “Diet” Sodas

We mentioned earlier, how consuming low-calorie foods and drinks loaded full of artificial ingredients is not considered healthy. Here’s a look at why.

So-called “diet” sodas are marketed as such because they don’t contain any sugar and are therefore calorie-free. If you taste them they still have a sweet taste. Where does that come from? Well more often than not, that sweet taste comes from an artificial chemical sweetener such as aspartame.

Chemical sweeteners, other chemicals, and artificial ingredients found in diet sodas have been linked with a variety of health issues.

Instead of drinking these beverages, get your hydration from water. Water is vital for organ function, circulation, athletic performance, and general health and wellbeing.

Aim to drink at least 2 liters of mineral water daily and you’ll look and feel so much better. If you can’t obtain mineral water, filtered water will also work very well.

5. Try To Ditch Your Unhealthy Habits

For many of us, alcohol and fast food may taste good but they can also seriously damage our health.

Other unhealthy habits such as smoking can also be tough to beat, though we should really do everything in our power to ditch them.

Some habits such as junk food or alcohol can be enjoyed in moderation though we should try to be healthy for the majority of the time.

6. Try To Walk More

Walking is a great form of cardiovascular exercise that helps to boost circulation, strengthen the heart, burn calories, reduce blood pressure, reduce LDL cholesterol, and plenty more.

Instead of driving to the shops for a bottle of milk and a loaf of bread, simply throw on some comfortable shoes and walk there for your essentials.

Not only will you burn more calories, but you’ll also be doing your bit to help the environment as well.

7. Find exercises that you enjoy doing

Far too many people make the mistake of assuming that exercise has to be done in a gym. Now don’t get us wrong, gyms are very beneficial and are great for working out, but they aren’t the be-all and end-all of exercise.

If you enjoy working out at a gym, that’s all good but if not don’t worry because there are still plenty of options. If you hate the prospect of going to exercise at a gym, don’t go. Instead, find something you do enjoy.

Cycling is a great form of exercise. It’s also a great way to get some fresh air and to get out of the house. If you enjoy cycling, why not use that as your primary source of exercise?

Basically, what we’re trying to say here is that exercise should be fun. If it is you’ll work harder, look forward to it, and it won’t feel like a chore or a challenge.

8. Try To Reduce Your Screen Time

We now live in an age that is dominated by technology. Everywhere we turn we find touch screens, smart phones, tablets, laptops, computers, and more. Getting away from it is tougher and tougher.

Despite this, it’s important that we limit our screen time as staring at computer or phone screens and electronic devices for several hours each day can result in a wide range of health issues. These include:

  • Headache
  • Damaged vision
  • Migraine
  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Back pain
  • Mental health disorders
  • A lack of exercise
  • Poor posture
  • And more…

We aren’t saying you should put down your phone and never look at another TV or computer screen again. What we are saying is that you should limit your screen time.

Try to cut back on the amount of screen time you have, schedule exercise breaks for walking, and try not to look at a screen for at least one hour before going to sleep.
